TopBusiness Connections News Brief

2011: Year of the Federal Agencies

Have you been bombarded by messages about Federal agency regulations? As Paul Ross, attorney with McAfee & Taft, explained at the OKC Metro Employers Council in January, focus this year is going to be on compliance and enforcement of Federal and state regualtions, not on new legislation. Hosts of new agents will be doing audits in our area and that means you need to be ready! COWIB is hosting two in-depth I-9 seminars, one on April 14 and the other on April 15.

These are not your usual short and generic webinars because corporate immigration compliance and I-9 compliance have a very large bulls eye on them as evidenced by the DOL increasing their regional staffs to conduct I-9 compliance audits nationwide.  Corporate immigration compliance and I-9 administration are now easy targets for DOL to assess steep fines on a business and affix criminal liability on corporate executives, managers, and human resources staff.  You will leave these seminars with the in-depth specific knowledge you need to get into compliance and you will receive a ready-to-use Immigration Compliance Policy, Plans, and Procedures manual.   If you register through the links below, you will receive a special discounted price that COWIB is passing on to you in our on-going efforts to support Oklahoma businesses.

Have you met with Business Connections yet?

Sheila Baber, HR Director of Standard Testing, sent us an email that explained very well why COWIB brings business services to you through Business Connections:

"I am so glad I have learned of your program, and the valuable tools you have brought us from the Central Oklahoma Workforce Investment Board.  I have screened many people to the benchmark position when we are in need of similar talent, and have hired 2 young individuals just beginning their careers.

I have managed this operation since 1992, and have never had such valuable and useful hiring tools.  Your program is also good for young people looking for professional opportunities.  It aids in communicating our needs, and theirs.  As a result, companies like ours will retain employees for many years, and those employees will be able to grow with us and establish a lifelong career path.

Standard Testing and Engineering Company has been in business in Oklahoma since 1951, and hope to be around for another 60 years. Smaller companies, like ours, do not have the HR departments to rely upon, so the COWIB is now a critical step in our hiring process.  I look forward to working with you during 2011."

If you have not met with a Business Connections representative, please contact us and let us see if we can help your business grow!

On the Job Training (OJT) Funds

There is some new OJT funding available for a limited number of jobs in our four-county area. Qualifying businesses of any size must operate year round and pay an hourly wage or salary. The funding is for new hires only and reimburses a portion of wages during the hands-on training period. For more information, contact:

Vicki Murray at VickiMurray@cowib.org or (405) 639-3671

or

Bill Bryant at BillBryant@cowib.org or (405) 622-2030.
